Strike is a licensed company in the US and follows the unclaimed property laws of the states its customers live in. These laws apply to any company holding someone else’s money, including banks. When an account holds funds but its owner hasn’t used it for years, usually three to five depending on the state, and can’t be reached, the company must transfer the funds to the state. This is called escheatment, as Strike’s Terms of Service for individuals explain, and using your account, even just logging in, keeps it active.

If you received a notice from Strike

Before sending any funds to a state, Strike emails a notice with the subject “URGENT – Unclaimed Property Notification”. Log in to confirm your account is active, and you can keep holding your funds, withdraw them, or buy bitcoin. If your account is restricted or was closed for this reason, contact support to verify it’s yours before the funds go to the state.

A real notice shows your anti-phishing code. Fake unclaimed property letters also circulate, so check any notice in the Strike app rather than through its links, and see how to avoid scams for the signs of an official Strike email.

If your funds were sent to the state

Once Strike transfers funds to the state, it can no longer return them. You or your heirs can claim them from the state for free, with no deadline. Funds go to the state of your last known address, so if you’ve moved, check earlier states too. The state may sell bitcoin under its law, and if it does, you can reclaim only the dollar proceeds.

A state can take two months or more to process a report before you can file a claim. Most ask for a government-issued ID, proof of address or account ownership, and proof of any earlier address, and heirs usually need documents such as a will or death certificate.

Find every state’s program for free through unclaimed.org, or search several at once on MissingMoney.com, which doesn’t cover every state. Paid finder services are unnecessary, and some are scams.
